SUSTAINABLE PENANG WHATSAPP AS A CROWD RESEARCH TOOL

Dear friends, we have a wonderful resource here with Whatsapp Sustainable Penang in the form of a searchable database of all of our exchanges since the generous creation of this great collaborative tool by no less than the formidable Engineer Lim Thean Heng all the way back there on December 14, 2015.

Just in case you didn’t notice it the transcript of all of these conversations which I have collected and inspected in searchable form run for more than half a million words of what . . . Not just idle chat, but rather the exchanges of a conserved citizenry about the sustainability challenges of Penang in all its dimensions, including of course the running battle of the Penang Transport Master Plan .

In support of our on-going Better Choices book project – “Bringing Sustainable Transportation to Smaller Asian Cities” – we are in the process of developing an open library with key references on sources intended to be useful on our topic to planners, local government, decision makers,  operators, the media, students,  and concerned elements of civil society. These documents are being selected with the counsel of leading authorities in our field.

This app is based on the idea that a democracy can only work if everyone plays a role. As such better Penang is a community-driven effort, it will only work if you and I do our part to make it work.

NOTE: This app Is created and maintained by volunteers using their own resources. No government fund was spent for this project and while we are happy to receive the support from local government officials, we are not directly affiliated to the government.
