The Soft City 2020 Collaborative – An Introduction

The Soft City 2020 Collaborative is a joint venture launched in late 2016 by Luud Schimmelpennink (The Netherlands)) and Eric Britton (France/USA) as an open public interest forum building on their extensive international competence, experience and networks in the broad area of ecological, environmental and social innovation to improve quality of life in and around cities — and specifically in support of sustainable and equitable mobility and creative use of public space. The two principals have long collaborated on an ad hoc basis, and decided that the time has come for a forceful joint effort targeting the period 2017-2020.

About Luud Schimmelpennink

Luud is an engineer, life-long environmental activist and since 2007 Managing Director of the Ytech Innovation Centre in Amsterdam. He first came into public view in the early 1960s through his role with the Dutch Provo counterculture and the White Bicycle Plan. Since the mid-1960s Schimmelpennink has been active as an industrial designer,  social innovator and local politician, with special focus on sustainable transport concepts. His work aims to reduce the number of conventional motor cars in cities for environmental and public health reasons, and provide people with viable alternative means of getting around in the city. In the process, he has pioneered the concept of sharing vehicles and public space, and forever transformed the way that we think about transport in cities.

About the 2017 Amsterdam Brainstorming Slam on Radical Rethinking of Transport in Cities

The team is presently working to lay the groundwork for an international invitational two-day Brainstorming Slam on Radical Rethinking of Transport in Cities, tentatively to be held in late summer 2017. This is seen as a high priority strategic climate initiative for the transport sector. Ten places are open to outstanding city projects breaking the old patterns and showing the way for the future, with ten places for representatives of innovative Dutch city projects. Full gender parity will be respected. This will be a jet fuel free conference. All participants invited to join meeting and Amsterdam by foot, bicycle, public transport or train.
